Students at Front Range Christian School Serve Community through “Go! Wednesday” Program

On the crisp morning of January 12, Jeremiah Miller and Daniel Good hopped out of their chaperone’s car as it came to a stop on Acoma Street in Englewood.  Grabbing their lunches they joined four classmates and descended the steps of the Mayflower Congregational Church.   Julianne Cusick, a parent at Front Range Christian School, ushered the boys through the factory of activity of His Hands Christians Ministries, a food bank serving the homeless in south Denver. The six boys promptly got to work.  Serving homeless families on a monthly basis is a regular part of the curriculum for students at Front Range Christian School.

Kathleen Sherman, middle school teacher at Front Range Christian, launched the "Go! Wednesday" program.  "Many kids in American culture are very caught up in themselves," Sherman commented. "Instead we want them to focus on serving others. Through the Go-Wednesday program, I've seen students realling learn how to interact with people who act and think differently than they do."

During the event,128 junior high and high school students served at local charities such as Green Gables Multi-Housing, Colorado Assisted Living, ARC, Joshua Station, and the Ronald McDonald House.  Students serve for one afternoon per month through the program.

Johnny Davis, Founder and Director of His Hands Christian Ministries, commented, “We appreciate the help Front Range students provide. When we started this ministry 3 years ago, we were serving only a handful of families each week. Thanks to God’s faithfulness, we now serve over 400 families per month.”

Dave Sherman, Executive Director of Front Range Christian School, commented, “We want our students to be both smart and to develop an ethic of service."  Programs like Go-Wednesday give students practice fulfilling that goal every month. At Front Range Christian School, service-learning is the norm.
